Vietnam confirms foreign policy of promoting ASEAN's cooperation with the US

(VOVWORLD) - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Wednesday will begin a week-long visit to the United States and the United Nations. On Thursday, he will attend a 2-day special ASEAN-US summit marking the 45th founding anniversary of relations between the two sides in Washington D.C. His trip affirms Vietnam's consistent foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation, development, and being a reliable partner and active and responsible member of the international community.

Vietnam-US Comprehensive Partnership strengthened

In 27 years of normalized diplomatic relations, Vietnam and the US have made long strides based on mutual benefits and respecting each other’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political institutions.

The two countries are each other top’s partner. Bilateral trade turnover increased rapidly to more than 111 billion USD in 2021, nearly 21 billion USD more than in 2020. The US has shown a willingness to cooperate in areas of interest to Vietnam such as infrastructure, supply chain, energy, and digital economy development.

The two countries have cooperated in COVID-19 prevention and control,  economic recovery, national defense and security, and resolving war aftermath. They continue to strengthen cooperation in climate change response, education, and exchanges on regional and global issues of mutual concern.

US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper told a recent press conference that the US is ready to boost cooperation with Vietnam.         

During his visit to the US, Prime Minister Chinh will have substantive and effective exchanges with US officials to set out cooperative orientations and promote stronger ties bilaterally and in handling regional and global issues.

ASEAN-US relations, UN cooperation promoted

Prime Minister Chinh and other ASEAN leaders will attend a special summit to mark the 45th anniversary of ASEAN-US ties. The event affirms both sides’ commitment to building trust, promoting economic and trade ties, and enhancing people-to-people exchange.

Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung said: “The summit is an opportunity for the leaders to discuss development orientations and for ASEAN leaders to express their views, opinions, and proposals on how the US should approach the region to create a commonality of interests for the region, ASEAN, and the US. The summit’s results will certainly contribute to shaping the relationship between the two sides as well as their policies towards the region and towards each other.”

At the summit Vietnam will actively engage in discussions and exchanges in a spirit of sincerity, trust, and cooperation, contributing to the ASEAN-US strategic partnership to promote peace, stability, and sustainable prosperity. This will be an opportunity for Vietnamese leader to meet directly with other ASEAN leaders to promote bilateral cooperation.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will meet with UN leaders and promote implementation of the strategic cooperation framework between Vietnam and the United Nations for the period 2022-2026 in the key areas of inclusive social development, resilience to climate change and natural disasters, environmental sustainability, and economic transformation and governance.

Prime Minister Chinh’s trip is important to implementing Vietnam's consistent foreign policy, affirming Vietnam's position and responsibility in ASEAN, and promoting ASEAN's cooperation with the US, an important partner. The visit also demonstrates Vietnam’s strong commitment and active contribution to global peace and stability and to consolidating its cooperation with the UN.
