Airlines cancel Lebanon flights amid Israel-Hezbollah escalation
(VOVWORLD) -Germany's national airline Lufthansa said it had suspended flights to and from the Lebanese capital of Beirut until the end of Tuesday due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.
In a statement on Monday, Lufthansa group said it had suspended five routes to and from Beirut, operated by carriers Swiss International Air Lines, Eurowings, and Lufthansa.
Beirut airport has also recorded flight cancellations or delays. Lebanon's Middle East Airlines (MEA) said it had adjusted and delayed flight schedules to hedge against insurance risks as tensions escalate between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
Turkish Airlines also reportedly canceled two flights which were due to land in Beirut on Sunday night.
Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport is Lebanon's only airport and has been a frequent target during the country's civil war and previous conflicts with Israel, including the 2006 conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.
Cross-border fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon has increased since the Gaza war broke out on October 7 last year. The conflict has disrupted flights and transportation across the region.
