Vietnam braces for super typhoon Yagi

(VOVWORLD) - Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan on Wednesday warned that storm  Yagi could develop into a super typhoon before impacting Vietnam in the coming days.

Speaking at a meeting in Hanoi  to discuss responses to the typhoon, Minister Hoan said that Yagi is forecast to hit provinces in the region spanning from Quang Ninh to Thanh Hoa.

“We have to act right now because time is running out.  We need to work out scenarios and plans to minimize risks to people's lives and property, as well as infrastructure. Evacuating residents, especially tourists on islands and fishermen working in coastal aquaculture areas should be considered. Depending on the local situation, other necessary measures should be taken including banning vessels from setting sail, prohibiting large gatherings, and closing schools,” said Minister Hoan.

Typhoon Yagi is predicted to make landfall in Vietnam on Saturday.

In the Philippines, it triggered heavy rain, floods, and landslides, leaving 15 people dead and 21 missing.
