Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said in a statement that the establishment of an international criminal tribunal would send a clear message that the international community will not tolerate acts that threaten international peace and security by endangering civil aviation. She said that a criminal tribunal of the UN Security Council was the best way to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
Flight MH17 en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down within conflict zone in eastern Ukraine nearly one year ago, killing all 298 passengers and aircrew, including 27 Australian citizens.
