About a month ago, Cambodian agencies arrested 4 members of an NGO and a Deputy Head of the National Electoral Council for corruption charges. A day later, some NGOs in Cambodia initiated the “Black Monday campaign” to incite people to wear in black to march along streets asking the government to release the detainees.
The Cambodian government has strengthened security, increased communications to explain to the people the core of the issue and hostile forces’ scheme to divide national unity, and severely punished the violators. No one took to the street for the Black Monday appeal in Phnom Penh on Monday, May 23.
