China & ASEAN to cooperate for COC
(VOVworld)- China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will keep working on establishing the Code of Conduct in the East Sea.
Xinhua News Agency on Friday quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei’s speech in regards to the discussion of the Code of Conduct in the East Sea as saying that China and the ASEAN have agreed to maintain dialogue on the foundation of the earnest and effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea. Hong said the two sides will create conditions for negotiation and consensus to reach an eventual Code of Conduct.
Before that in July, ASEAN issued the Six-Point Principles on the East Sea, repeating its member countries’ commitments to comply with the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea and soon to obtain the Code of Conduct in the East Sea. Relevant parties are urged to restrain, not to use violence, and peacefully resolve disputes in line with international laws, including the 1982 International Convention on the Law of the Sea.
