Vietnamese farmers expect to harvest 180,000 tons of lychees this year. On Monday 53,000 tons had been sold in Vietnam or shipped overseas. In March, Luc Ngan lychees of Bac Giang province become the first Vietnamese farm produce to be granted geographical indication protection in Japan and has so far been protected in eight countries: China, the US, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Singapore, Lao, and Cambodia.

Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien said e-commerce, the trend of the new era, is a wise direction for Bac Giang in pandemic time. Bac Giang lychees have recently gone on sale at China’s Alibaba e-market.

Le Anh Duong, Chairman of the Bac Giang provincial People’s Committee, said, “Lychees are our main crop. COVID-19 safety measures are in full swing to ensure the safety of lychee traders in Bac Giang. We have 1,500 trucks and farmers picking, processing, and packing the fruit, ready for transportation upon requests from whole-sale buyers.”

Organizers of the online conference announced certificate of geographical indication protection in Japan, opened Bac Giang lychee booths on e-commerce platforms, and cut the ribbon for a convoy of trucks carrying Bac Giang lychees.
