(VOVworld) – Egypt’s interim government headed by Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab submitted its resignation on Monday, a day after newly-elected President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi was sworn in. Egyptian media reported that Sisi asked Mahled to return to the post and form a new cabinet. It is predicted that there will be minor changes in the lineup with many of the leading ministers such as finance likely unchanged.

Mahlab is still leading the government, which will stay on in a caretaker role until a new cabinet is formed. This is the third and final step of the transition process proposed by the army after ousting Muslim President Mohamed Morsi.
The Egyptian constitution gives the president authority to appoint a prime minister who can be approved or disapproved by the government. After a government veto, the President must accept the nominee of the ruling party or the largest coalition in the government.
