Five countries assume their responsibilities as elected members of UN Security Council

(VOVWORLD) - Algeria, Guyana, South Korea, Sierra Leone and Slovenia began their roles as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council on Thursday.

The five countries replaced Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland. A flag installation ceremony was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York to mark the start of their responsibilities.

“We are looking forward to working with you for the two coming years, to implement the mandate of this council, preserving international peace and security, and to defend multilateralism respectful of the values of the UN Charter," Security Council President Amar Bendjama said.

The UN Security Council consists of 15 members, including 5 permanent members (the UK, France, the US, Russia, and China) and 10 non-permanent members elected by the UN General Assembly in rotation, each member serving a 2-year term.
