German coalition talks between CDU and SPD to begin

(VOVWORLD) -Friedrich Merz, the candidate for Chancellor of the Christian Democratic/Social Christian Union (CDU/CSU) alliance, which just won the German Bundestag election, declared Tuesday that negotiations to form a coalition government with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) have begun, and he hopes to accelerate these negotiations in the coming days.

Mr. Merz aims to finalize the coalition agreement with the SPD by Easter (April 20) because issues like security, immigration, and the economy can’t wait too long.

Mr. Merz expressed confidence that the CDU/CSU can reach an agreement on a “good coalition deal” with the SPD in a very short time. The negotiations, led by Merz, are supported by Markus Söder, the head of the CSU in Bavaria.
