German media: Germany, US unlikely to reach no-spy deal

(VOVworld) – The US and Germany are reportedly unable to clinch a no-spy deal. According to the South German Newspaper (SZ) and the North German Radio (NDR), talks are proceeding but Germany has little hope for an agreement with the US, who said no to ending phone taps on German cabinet members and revealing when it began eavesdropping on the phones of President Merkel and other senior officials. The US rejected Germany’s demand to inspect the alleged listening station believed to be inside the US embassy in Berlin.

The German government has released no official comment and says both sides continue to discuss ways to improve bilateral intelligence cooperation.
