International aid, condolences offered to Myanmar, Thailand

(VOVWORLD)-Countries and international organizations on Friday sent their condolences to and pledged support for victims of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) issued a statement extended its deepest condolences to the victims and families affected by the disaster. “ASEAN reaffirms its solidarity with the families and communities affected by the earthquake and its impact,” the statement read. The bloc has also pledged to support relief and recovery efforts in full coordination with Myanmar and Thailand, based on their identified priorities.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in a statement offered humanitarian assistance to those affected and said they are ready to support humanitarian efforts as needed. “Malaysia stands in unwavering solidarity with our neighbors and fellow ASEAN member states," he added.

Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that his country is prepared to deploy the Operation Lionheart contingent to help with urban search and rescue operations, as well as disaster relief efforts, in Myanmar.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also extended condolences to the governments and people of the region. He said, "A terrible earthquake has hit parts of Southeast Asian today. And we send our condolences to the governments and people of the region. The United Nations system is mobilizing to help those in need. The government of Myanmar has asked for international support and our team in Myanmar is already in contact in order to fully mobilize our resources in the region to support the people of Myanmar. But of course, there are other countries impacted. But the epicenter is in Myanmar. And Myanmar is the weakest country in this present situation."

Also on Friday, US President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that he had spoken with officials in Myanmar about the earthquake that hit the country and that his administration would be providing some form of assistance.

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said the 27-nation bloc stood ready to help Myanmar and Thailand. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot also said France is “prepared to offer support as soon as assistance is requested.” He added that diplomatic facilities in Bangkok had been evacuated as a precautionary measure against any potential risks.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent his condolences to Myanmar administration. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations on Saturday has deployed two planes with rescuers and 120 medical personnel to Myanmar.

India on Saturday launched “Operation Brahma” and sent 15 tones of relief materials – including tents, blankets, food packets, and hygiene kits to assist the people of Myanmar. 

The team from Yunnan, China, has been dispatched to join the search and rescue efforts in Myanmar on Saturday. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) said it is preparing trauma injury supplies for Myanmar and had triggered its emergency management response.

Latin American countries have expressed solidarity with the people of Myanmar and Thailand. Representatives from the foreign ministries of Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala, Ecuador, and more have extended their condolences for the victims and their families, and hope that Myanmar and Thailand will soon overcome the tragedy.
