Japan commemorates 80 years since end of World War II

(VOVWORLD) - Japan on Friday commemorated 80 years since the end of World War II and paid tribute to the 3.1 million people who lost their lives during the war.

A government ceremony was held in Tokyo, attended by Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, and Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, and the families of those who died in the war.

“Our generation today knows little about war. Once again, we must deeply keep in our hearts the remorse and lessons from the war that befell our world 80 years ago. We will never repeat the tragedy of war. We will never go the wrong way. Today, Japan has become a peaceful nation. We are actively contributing to preserving global peace and development. We will uphold the memories of war, pass them down to the next generations, and pursue actions toward lasting peace for mankind,” Prime Minister Ishiba said.

Emperor Naruhito offered his condolences to the families of those lost their lives in the war and prayed for world peace and Japan’s prosperity."

The same day, members of the public joined survivors of the atomic bombing 80 years ago in Hiroshima rang the peace bell at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.
