Japanese-language drama 'Shogun' breaks record at 2024 Emmys
(VOVWORLD) - Japanese-language historical drama "Shogun", a series about wartime and feudal Japanese society, smashed Emmy records by winning 18 trophies including Outstanding Drama Series, one of the important awards at the award ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

“Shogun” secured three more wins: Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai for lead actor and actress in a drama series, and Frederick E.O. Toye for directing.
“Shogun” became the first non-English-language winner of the best drama Emmy. In addition to receiving four of 25 nominations, “Shogun” now became the first non-English-language winner of the best drama Emmy. With its big win at this year's Emmy Awards, "Shogun" is considered a strong contender for next year's Golden Globe Awards.

“Shogun” is inspired by the novel of the same name by American writer James Clavell, set in feudal Japan in the early 17th century, with battles for power between lords.
Experts consider this series the Eastern version of the “Game of Thrones” series in conveying the spirit of bushido, showing the complexity of feudal Japanese society. This year’s film version elevates the Japanese daimyo’s role instead of the western orientalist fantasies like in the 1980 version.
Anna Sawai, “Shogun” lead actress, said, “When making this film, I wanted to act like the Japanese, like the way the Japanese behave. I don’t want to do something that Westerners love it, but Japanese people thought it wasn’t great. So I think we did a good job.”
