(VOVworld) - The Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control said on Sunday that torrential rain and floods that have left at least 15 people dead, 9 missing and 18 injured in central Vietnam.

An emergency meeting on combating flood |
100,000 homes have been destroyed and 1,600ha of rice field and 10,000ha of farm land have been submerged. National and provincial roads have been eroded or damaged. On Saturday afternoon, a government working team led by Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung inspected measures to fight floods in Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue provinces.
The military forces have been deployed to search for the missing and evacuated hundreds from the flood zones. Local authorities have been keeping a close eye on areas with high risk of landslide and are ready for search and rescue as well as evacuation of locals if necessary.
Efforts are being stepped up to ensure safety for locals and their property.
According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorology Forecasting, heavy rains will continue hitting central provinces until October 17.
On Sunday, the Vietnam Red Cross Society decided to provide an emergency relief aid worth 2 billion VND to 4 provinces: Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, and Quang Tri. The aid includes 1 billion VND in cash, 900 boxes of household kits, 300 sets of tools for house repairing, 70,000 water purification tablets, 200 water purification tanks and 100 boxes of shampoos.
