With nearly 99% of votes counted in the second round of the presidential election held Sunday, Sandu had 55% of the vote, according to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), compared to 45% for Alexandr Stoianoglo, a former prosecutor general.
According to the CEC, the election had a relatively high turnout of 54%, about 1.6 million voters, exceeding the 20% threshold needed to declare the election valid.
President Sandu supports joining the European Union, which Moldova applied for membership in 2022. EU accession negotiations began last June.
