The Myanmar President’s Office announced that Suu Kyi recommended the meetings after her party won a resounding victory in the November 8 election. Earlier, she held talks with Parliament Speaker U Shwe Mann. The national conciliation meetings aim to seek a gentle political transition.

The NLD won nearly 80% of the total seats at three levels of the parliament. According to Myanmar’s Constitution, the NLD is eligible to set up an independent government and hold the chairmanship of both the lower and upper houses. It is also able to nominate two vice presidential candidates. But the Constitution stipulates that 25% of all parliamentary seats are reserved for military appointees.

It means the NLD will likely have to cooperate with the military forces to some extent. The current government’s term will finish in March, 2016. The presidential election is slated for February, 2016.
