Police used tear gas grenades and rubber bullets to disperse crowds of tens of thousands of protesters calling for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign. 

On July 19, 67 people were killed when students took to the streets demanding the abolition of the quota system for government job applicants. The deteriorating security situation forced Hasina's Government to declare an indefinite nationwide curfew starting at 6 p.m. on Sunday and a three-day nationwide holiday starting on Monday.

The ongoing protests and violence are Prime Minister Hasina’s biggest test in her 20 years in power. She was declared the winner of her fourth election in January, an election which was boycotted by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the main opposition party.

Neighboring India has issued a security warning urging its citizens not to travel to Bangladesh until the situation is calmer.
