On September 10, 2024, the historic flash flood triggered by Typhoon Yagi claimed the lives of 67 people and flattened 37 out of 39 houses in the village.
A year later, locals with the help of the Government, more than 650 officers and soldiers, as well as philanthropists have been rebuilding their lives. The resettlement area accommodating 40 stilt houses, a spacious school and a cultural house has been built. The spirit of solidarity and willpower have motivated survivors to revive resiliently.
A villager named Hoang Van Voi said: “We hope that locals will continue to love each other and that all the households who have lost their loved ones will rise up to develop their economy again. We are lucky enough to be alive, so our responsibility is to live for ourselves and for our deceased relatives.”
Helping villagers settle down, the local government has striven to find solutions to sustainable production. Trinh Thi Duyen, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Phuc Khanh Commune, said: “We orient the villagers to plant orange trees, which are inherently a potential advantage of Phuc Khanh commune. Now we continue to expand the cultivation of orange trees in this landslide area, with the hope that in the future we will build a brand of "Lang Nu Orange".
The memorial ceremony was to remember the deceased and to renew a sense of hope for the future of the survivors.
