North Korean state news agency KCNA said the test is aimed at proving the stability of a system of straight missile firing from its maximum underwater depth. The news agency added the missile meets all technical requirements, capable of attacking precisely from the underwater.
Earlier, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Su-yong said Pyongyang is ready to halt its nuclear tests if the US suspends its annual military exercises with South Korea. He added that suspending the military exercises with Seoul could open the door to talks and reduced tensions.
