(VOVWORLD) -French President Emmanuel Macron shared his first phone call in three years with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, a step toward the resumption of high-level dialogue between two nations who play key roles in the international community.

The two leaders discussed several urgent international issues, including the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
President Putin reaffirmed Russia's desire to find a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the conflicts. He said any potential agreement with Ukraine must be based on the new territorial realities and address the root causes of the conflict.
President Macron called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and the resumption of peace negotiations. He reiterated France’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
President Putin and President Macron agreed that, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, Russia and France hold a special responsibility for maintaining regional peace and security and upholding the nuclear non-proliferation regime. The two stressed the importance of respecting Iran’s right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes in accordance with international law, and agreed to stay in close communication.
