(VOVWORLD) - Major political parties in South Korea are trading criticism and opposing views on the Wednesday arrest of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, which is considered unprecedented in the country’s constitutional history.
Chairman of the People's Power Emergency Response Committee, Kwon Young Se, called the arrest unlawful, adding that that he will hold the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) “accountable to the end for executing the illegal warrant.”
Meanwhile, Democratic Party floor leader Park Chan-dae said the arrest “is the first step toward restoring constitutional order, democracy and the rule of law” in South Korea.
The same day, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa said at a press conference that though Japan refrains from commenting on other countries’ internal affairs, it is deeply interested in recent developments in South Korea, as the country is an indispensable neighbor for Japan in many issues.
“The importance of our relations with South Korea remains unchanged in the current strategic environment," Yoshimasa said.
