Taliban spokesman says “war is over in Afghanistan“

(VOVWORLD) - The Taliban declared the war in Afghanistan over after insurgents took control of the presidential palace in Kabul, as US-led forces departed and Western nations scrambled on Monday to evacuate their citizens. President Ashraf Ghani fled the country on Sunday, saying he wanted to avoid bloodshed.

Mohammad Naeem, the spokesman for the Taliban’s political office, released a statement on Sunday saying no diplomatic body or headquarters was targeted in the Taliban’s approach and the group would provide safety for citizens and diplomatic missions.

Naeem said the Taliban is ready to have a dialogue with all Afghan public figures and to address the international community’s concerns via dialogues.

On Monday the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on the situation in Afghanistan.
