Ukraine resumes military offensive in eastern region
(VOVworld) – Ukraine has resumed a military offensive in the eastern part of the country just hours after US Vice President Joe Biden ended his two-day visit to Ukraine where he pledged US support for Kiev and threatened to increase sanctions on Russia. Acting Ukrainian President Oleksandr Turchynov said on Tuesday that he decided to resume the offensive after two brutally beaten bodies had been discovered in the city of Slavyansk which is under the control of protestors, with one thought to be a local politician.

Ukraine’s eastern region is getting mired in violence despite an agreement recently reached by the US, EU, Russia, and Ukraine in Geneva, Switzerland. Protestors refused to leave government buildings they had occupied more than a week ago and reiterated their request for a national referendum on Slavyansk city’s autonomy by May 11th.
