The meeting followed President Sisi’s televised speech on Tuesday, in which he urged Israel and Palestine to seize what he said was a "real opportunity" and hailed the peace deal signed between Egypt and Israel in 1979.
Kerry wanted to explore in more detail Sisi's proposal to mediate a reconciliation between rival Palestinian factions to pave the way toward a lasting peace accord with the Israelis. The US said the only way to end this conflict is by negotiation which results in two states resettling side-by-side with recognized borders. But Washington does not believe it is yet time to resume a direct bilateral dialogue, which must wait for some trust building and violence reduction. France and Egypt are pushing for a quicker resumption of efforts to seek a final deal.
