Vietnam proposes solutions to further Mekong cooperation

(VOVWORLD) - Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet proposed solutions to implement the three pillars of the Mekong-Japan cooperation strategy in the new period and suggested cooperation priorities for Mekong-Republic of Korea’s framework.

Deputy Foreign Minister Viet addressed the 15th Mekong-Japan Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (MJC 15) and the 12th Mekong-Korea Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (MKC 12) held on Friday in Vientiane, Laos. 

At the MJC 15, he emphasized social connectivity through developing transportation and logistics networks along the East-West economic corridor and the Southern economic corridor. Next, on digitalisation, focus should be made on developing digital infrastructure, quality digital human resources, supporting Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in digital transformation, and applying high technology into industries. Finally, effective cooperation is needed in the managing transboundary water resources, ensuring food security and energy, mitigating natural disasters and responding climate change.

At the MKC 12, the Deputy Foreign Minister  suggested mobilizing funding sources for projects on clean energy transition, carbon emissions reduction, smart agriculture, climate change response, and investment in infrastructure development, to promote green growth. 

He proposed the acceleration of the digital transformation process in the Mekong sub-region, together with strengthening cooperation on e-commerce, developing digital technology and implementing the Mekong-Korea Digital Forum. Mr. Viet called for the development of human resources for digital transformation and green transition, projects on retraining and improving skills for the sub-region's workforce.
