Vietnam to propose French colonial period documents for World Documentary Heritage recognition

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam plans to submit a nomination to UNESCO for recognizing French colonial period documents (1858–1954) as World Documentary Heritage, said Mr. Dang Thanh Tung, Director of the State Records and Archives Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Speaking at a press conference in Hanoi on Tuesday to mark the Lunar New Year 2025, Mr. Tung said the State Records and Archives Department has tasked the National Archives Center I with collaborating with the French Archives Department to prepare the dossier. The submission is expected this year, and if approved, Vietnam could see its fourth World Documentary Heritage recognized by 2026.

Vietnam currently holds three UNESCO-recognized World Documentary Heritages: the Nguyen Dynasty Woodblocks, the Nguyen Dynasty Royal Records, and the Doctoral Steles at the Temple of Literature.
