Vietnam youth embrace Earth Hour with everyday green habits

(VOVWORLD) - Young people across Vietnam are stepping up their commitment to environmental protection as part of the Earth Hour 2026 campaign, which will take place next Saturday.

Launched by the Ministry of Industry and Trade under the theme “Green Innovation – Green Future,” the campaign calls on households and businesses to switch off non-essential lights for one hour, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on March 28.

For many young participants, the 60-minute blackout is more than a symbolic gesture. It reflects a broader shift in mindset, where protecting the environment is seen as part of everyday life rather than a one-off activity.

One female participant said she will be turning off her lights for the full hour this year. "Over the past few days, I’ve also started taking the bus to work instead of using my motorbike. When I buy coffee, I avoid plastic cups and straws. At home, my family collects recyclable waste and brings it to a recycling center for sorting.”

Another told VOV, “I try to keep these habits going every day, not just during Earth Hour. For example, I limit my use of lights and electronic devices when they’re not needed, and I make use of natural light for reading and working.”
