(VOVWORLD) - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is set to convene an emergency session on Wednesday in New York, at the request of Algeria, Pakistan, and several other countries, following an Israeli airstrike targeting targeting senior Hamas leaders in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday.

Many countries and international organizations have condemned Israel’s attack. The European Union (EU) warned in a statement that “Israel’s airstrike violated international law and Qatar’s territorial integrity.” Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said “we express full solidarity with Qatar.” Any expansion of the Gaza conflict “must be avoided,” she added.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said Israel’s airstrikes violate Qatar’s sovereignty, breach international law, and “risk further escalation across the region.”
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump expressed his regret over the incident but did not criticize Israel. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said “President Trump immediately directed Special Envoy Witkoff to inform the Qataris of the impending attack.”
"The President views Qatar as a strong ally and friend of the United States and feels very badly about the location of this attack. President Trump believes this unfortunate incident could serve as an opportunity for peace. The President also spoke to the Amir and Prime Minister of Qatar and thanked them for their support and friendship to our country. He assured them that such a thing will not happen again on their soil," Leavitt said.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said Qatar reserves the right to respond to Israel’s attack on Doha, calling it a “turning point” for the region. Qatar, however, will continue with its mediation efforts to help achieve a ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
