Nguyen Duc Cuong was born in 1960 in Hanoi to a family with a tradition of machinery work. Cuong’s father worked at the Technical Department of the Ministry of Defense and his mother worked at the Thong Nhat Mechanics-Electronics Company. After graduating from high school, Cuong learned to repair machines and has worked at Thong Nhat Mechanics-Electronics Company since 1977. In 40 years, Cuong has come up with many ideas to improve techniques, modernize production lines, and promote his company’s trademark.

“Of my initiatives, an automated hydraulic system for a press machine used in the ceiling fan production line has been the most notable one. I also invented a hydraulic press system for a casting machine. It saved a lot of money. Similar systems imported from foreign countries cost ten times as much as the ones produced here,” Cuong said.

Cuong now heads a department of 27 workers responsible for maintaining and repairing 800 machines.

“The machines are modern and requires skillful workers to operate. Skillful workers and those who have innovatives in production will be awarded,” he explained.

Cuong has learned from the experience of his colleagues and from technical publications. He now trains the young engineers. He told VOV: “This work requires great passion, initiative, and patience. A worker must spend a lot of time doing research and practising his skills. In the context of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, we must study hard to keep up with advances in technology”.

Nguyen Duc Cuong has won the title of Hanoi Skilled Worker, a certificate of merit from the Prime Minister, and other awards for his innovations.
