Hieu has worked for the Hanoi Urban Environment Company for nearly 30 years. Her team is in charge of cleaning the area around Hoan Kiem lake and Hang Bac street which is thronged with foreign tourists. Her team has worked closely with local authorities to encourage tourists and locals to dispose of rubbish properly in public places. A resident in Hanoi’s Old Quarter said: “The streets are clean because Hieu and her co-workers collect the rubbish and sweeps all day. They work very hard”.

Hieu begins her work at 6 p.m and finishes at 2 a.m. The Old Quarter is packed with tourists every day, who create mountains of rubbish.

“This area is crowded with tourists, so we try to keep the area clean. Normally, our work finishes at 2 a.m but on the weekend, we work until 3 or 4 a.m,” Hieu said.

Despite her difficult job, Hieu still manages to handle family and other social obligations. Hieu teaches younger workers how to work more efficiently.

“Hieu always encourages us in our work. She is kind and dedicated,” said Le Thi Yen, one of Hieu’s co-workers.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang, Head of the Administration Office of the Hanoi Urban Environment Company, said: “Ms. Hieu has been the head of the urban environment group for more than 10 years. She is a good model of responsibility and a good team leader.”

In 2010, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Hieu received a certificate of merit from the Prime Minister for her contribution to the celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.
