Every day, doctor Hong is busy with his management work, giving medical consultation and treatment, and performing surgeries. Hong and his colleagues are also involved in communication activities to make people more aware of disease prevention as the seasons change.

During COVID-19, Hong instructed local people on ways to avoid the pandemic, and helped local authorities set up rapid response teams, and work out different scenarios.

“We have worked with relevant agencies, especially the communications sector, on COVID-19 prevention and control on mass media. We have also made fact-finding tours to communes and met local people to help them avoid the pandemic,” said Hong.

Doctor Hong was born and raised in Mu Cang Chai district. After graduation from a medical university in 1988, he returned to his home town to work.

Hong says that at that time the district still lacked medical facilities and people’s knowledge was limited. Hong and his colleagues visited villages to talk to locals about disease prevention, food hygiene, and keeping the environment clean, and urged them to bring ill people to the hospital for treatment.

“I decided to return to Mu Cang Chai to work because I wanted to provide medical care to people in the mountains,” said Hong.

With Hong and his colleagues’ contributions, Mu Cang Chai district’s medical center has improved and is meeting the healthcare needs of the local people.

“In the past, people used to give birth at home. When we were ill, we asked a spiritual healer for help. Now, we go to a hospital for medical consultation and treatment,” said Giang Thi Co of La Pan Tan commune, Mu Cang Chai district.

Despite his busy work, Hong is ready to help and share with his younger colleagues his expertise and knowledge of new techniques. Doctor Giang A Lu of Mu Cang Chai district’s medical center, said, “Doctor Hong has always been dedicated to public healthcare work. He is a role model for younger doctors to follow.”

For his great dedication and contribution to public healthcare, doctor Cu A Hong has received certificates of merit from the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Health, and the Yen Bai provincial People’s Committee. In 2020, he was awarded the title “Emeritus Doctor.”
