In 2009, research on the population of Asiatic black bears in Cat Tien National Park, one of the largest natural reserves in Vietnam, found that recent signs of bear activity accounted for 17% of all bear-made marks in the area, of which only 39% were determined to be made by Asiatic black bears. At the time, locals and rangers had thought the species would be extinct locally.
By 2023 many doubted there were any Asiatic black bears left in the wild. But one morning in October, the animal welfare organization Four Paws received a call reporting an Asiatic black bear 1,600km away.
