Lifting IUU “yellow card” and applying AI are key to Vietnam's sustainable fisheries

(VOVWORLD) - Digital transformation and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) are levers for Vietnam's fisheries sector to enhance its competitiveness and sustainable development, said Le Viet Binh, Deputy Chief of the Office at the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment on Tuesday.

At the opening ceremony of the 2026 International Fisheries Exhibition, Mr. Binh urged the fisheries sector continues to affirm its role as a pillar of the agricultural economy, which achieved a production volume of nearly 10 million tons and export turnover of 11.3 billion USD in 2025, up 12% compared to the previous year.

The positive growth momentum continued in 2026, with the first two months reporting 1.28 million tons of production and 1.76 billion USD in exports, a 23% increase compared to the same period. However, the biggest bottleneck today stems not only from input costs or climate change, but also from the more stringent requirements of the international market regarding traceability, supply chain transparency, and sustainable development.

In particular, the early removal of the European Union's warning against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing remains an urgent task, as the Ministry and localities are actively working with the EC inspection team this March.

“When we apply AI, big data, sensors, and automation, we can monitor the aquaculture environment in real time, predict diseases early, and optimize processes. This increases productivity, reduces costs, and ensures transparency and traceability, creating a foundation for Vietnamese seafood to improve its competitiveness,” Binh added.
