ASEAN expresses deep concern over escalating conflict in Middle East

(VOVWORLD) - ASEAN Foreign Ministers held a special virtual meeting on Friday to exchange views on the evolving situation in the Middle East and address its impacts on ASEAN.

A statement by the ASEAN Chair said member states expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict in the Middle East and called on all countries to respect international law, including the United Nations Charter.
The ministers stressed the importance of an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged all parties concerned to exercise maximum restraint, avoid actions that could worsen the situation, and resolve differences through diplomacy and dialogue in the interest of maintaining peace and stability in the region.
The meeting also discussed the safety and welfare of ASEAN citizens in affected areas and reaffirmed the bloc’s shared commitment to providing emergency assistance to ASEAN nationals.
