To explore the magic of this experience, let's go with Elif Asena Yildiz, a local tour guide, and two tourists who recently made a flight over the surreal landscape.

“The unique fairy chimneys here, the sunrise, hot air balloon rides, and ancient underground cities create a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I think that’s what makes Cappadocia unique,” said Elif Asena Yildiz, who studied in Cappadocia for four years before becoming a guide.
The region’s famed rock formations, combined with the early morning light and centuries-old underground cities, create a magical atmosphere that travelers can only fully appreciate from the sky.
Doan Nhat Dan, a senior at Coventry University, said flying over Cappadocia in a hot air balloon was like stepping into a painting.
“Hundreds of balloons fill the sky at dawn, casting shadows over the surreal rock formations. What struck me the most was how the pilots pointed out the ancient cave dwellings and vineyards below. It was history and geography coming alive,” said Dan.
Michael Luiz from Brazil, despite his fear of heights, found unexpected peace during his first balloon flight, “I was a little nervous before we took off, honestly. I’m not great with heights, but once we were up in the air, it was so peaceful. The quiet, the view, it was almost like floating in a dream. I felt real calm after a few minutes.”
He added, “The views were absolutely stunning. You see the rock formations and the valleys from a perspective that you just can’t get on the ground, and watching the sun rise was incredible. The sky turned all these beautiful colors and all the other balloons floating around was just magical.”
Elif enhances the journey for his passengers by elaborating the region’s history.
“We explain the history of the Hittites, Romans, and Byzantines, and point out cave churches and underground cities carved into rocks. There’s a really rich history here that we want to share with everybody.”
The blend of natural wonders and historical insights makes the balloon ride both a captivating adventure and an educational experience. The balloon route includes some of Cappadocia’s most iconic landmarks – Göreme Open-Air Museum, Uchisar Castle, Pashaba Monks Valley, and Avanos – all seen from a bird’s eye view, says Elif.
Many tourists are concerned about the risk of ballooning, but Elif said safety is the top priority of Nevşehir’s balloon operations.
“Flights depend on the wind and the rain, which can change. If conditions are unsafe, flights are canceled. All flights must be approved by the local Civil Aviation Authority,” said Elif.
Doan Ngoc Dan told us, “They kept the groups small, 10 to 12 people per basket, double-checked the harnesses, and canceled flights at the slightest wind change. At first, the height was intimidating, but the professionalism of the crew and the slow, steady movement made it feel secure. By the end, I wasn’t just a passenger. I felt part of something timeless.”
Michael said he was impressed with the professionalism of the crew, “Honestly, I felt really safe. The crew was professional. They went over all the safety stuff before we took off and they made sure we were all comfortable. They explained everything really clearly, which helped me relax, and I had no worries during the ride.”
