Cambodia commemorates 46 years of victory over Khmer Rouge regime

(VOVWORLD) - Cambodia on Tuesday celebrated the 46th anniversary of the historic January 7 victory, which marked the fall of the genocidal Pol Pot regime.

Speaking before tens of thousands of people at a meeting in Phnom Penh, President of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and President of the Cambodian Senate Hun Sen highlighted the importance of remembering the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge and honoring the sacrifices of those who fought to end the regime.   

On January 7, 1979, under the guidance of the Kampuchean United Front for National Salvation and with the assistance of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers, patriotic forces liberated Phnom Penh, bringing an end to the Khmer Rouge’s brutal rule. The victory saved more than 5 million Cambodian people from a regime responsible for the deaths of more than 3 million innocent people.  

Mr. Hun Sen reiterated the enduring gratitude of the Cambodian People’s Party and the Cambodian nation to Vietnam for its support and volunteer forces, which were instrumental in Cambodia’s escape from genocide.
