EU pledges more than 700 million USD in humanitarian aid to Syria
(VOVWORLD) - President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced on Friday that the European Union will provide approximately 620 million euros, or 722 million US dollars, in humanitarian aid to Syria for the 2026–2027 period, supporting the country’s reconstruction after more than a decade of civil war.

Speaking after a meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus, von der Leyen emphasized that Syria’s recovery and reconstruction needs are immense.
She added that the EU hopes to initiate negotiations to restore a cooperation agreement with Syria and establish a new political partnership framework, including high-level contacts expected in the first half of this year.
Von der Leyen is visiting the Middle East alongside President of the European Council Antonio Costa. This marks the EU’s highest-level visit to Syria since former leader Bashar al-Assad was overthrown in December 2024.
