Colonel Tran Ngoc Tuan, Director of the contractor consortium’s project management board, said that once the installation of Unit 1 is completed, they will proceed with the installation of Unit 2. “We have determined that Unit 1 will be ready to generate electricity by August 19. Although much work remains, we are fully mobilized to meet the deadline.”
Lilama 10, responsible for equipment installation, is deploying full manpower with three shifts working around the clock, while the Truong Son Construction Corporation is focused on excavation and reinforcement of the discharge channel, said Tuan.
Originally built in Hoa Binh province, (now part of Phu Tho province), the Hoa Binh hydropower plant was the largest of its kind in Vietnam and Southeast Asia from 1994 to 2012. The plant was constructed with technical and financial support from the former Soviet Union.
The Hoa Binh expansion project consists of two generating units with a total capacity of 480 MW. It was designed to enhance energy security and improve the power grid’s operational capacity in northern Vietnam.
