Former Nepalese Prime Minister’s wife killed in violent protests

(VOVWORLD) - The wife of former Nepalese Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal was killed after protesters torched her residence in the capital, Kathmandu. Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar’s death was among the most shocking incidents in the wave of violence that has rocked Nepal in recent days.

The demonstrations broke out on Monday, led by the “Gen Z” youth, following the government’s decision to block several social media platforms. Although the ban has been lifted, the movement is spreading violently against the government, corruption and political privilege.

Over the last two days, the violence has escalated rapidly, leaving at least 19 protesters dead and more than 500 injured. Many government buildings and properties, including the Parliament, Supreme Court, and residences of Nepalese leaders, including the home of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, were burnt.

Under mounting public pressure, Prime Minister Oli announced his resignation on Tuesday.
