Germany treasures its ties with the US, but warns that the ties should be based on transparency and mutual trust.

Steffen Seibert, a spokesperson for the German government, said the expulsion was made in light of the ongoing investigation into allegations of US spying and unanswered questions about the activities of American intelligence services in Germany.
Seibert said Germany will continue to pursue “close and trusting” relations with Western allies, including the US, while cautioning that those ties require transparency and “mutual trust”.
The White House has made no comment, but has insisted that bilateral intelligence and security co-operation is crucial to protecting American and German citizens. A White House press release said the US will continue to maintain ties with the German government in suitable channels.
