(VOVWORLD) - The International Olympic Committee confirmed that it will take up to four weeks to consider postponing the Tokyo Olympics amid mounting criticism of its handling of the coronavirus crisis.

The IOC is planning meetings with Japanese authorities, global sports officials, broadcasters, and sponsors that will deal with scenario planning for the Olympics, which are scheduled to start July 24.
An IOC spokesperson said the board will soon announce its next steps. He said cancellation of the games is not on the agenda, but the IOC is considering downscaling or suspending the games for months or even a year.
