“Young people drive change and can lead the way in their communities and at the national level. If we work together and exchange ideas, we can be much more effective in making migration work for all," Pauline Tamesis, UN Resident Coordinator, said at the talk show "Every Step: Inspiration on the Move" to celebrate International Migrants Day 2024.
Over 200 migrants, youth representatives, international organizations and guests attended the event.
According to IOM, of the world's 281 million migrants, 87 million or about 31% are under the age of 30. Young people migrate to pursue their hopes and dreams.
Tamesis called on the community to join hands to help young people, including young migrants, orient their development in the right direction in the face of today's global complexities, like rapidly changing labor markets, technological developments, demographic changes and climate change.
Kendra Rinas, Chief Mission of IOM in Vietnam, emphasized the importance of young people in addressing complex migration issues. According to her, the voices, ideas and actions of young people play an important role in shaping migration policies and strategies, contributing to Vietnam achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Deputy Director of the Consular Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Phan Thi Minh Giang informed about Vietnam's efforts in ensuring safe migration and supporting migrants. She said that each year, about 100,000 Vietnamese workers go to work abroad under contracts and over 10,000 people go abroad for study.
Faced with a continued uptick in migration, the Vietnamese Government has adopted policies to promote legal, safe and orderly migration, while preventing and combating migration through unofficial channels, as well as protecting the legitimate rights and interests of migrants.
Vietnam has closely cooperated with countries and international partners to create an international network to ensure legal, safe migration and prevent and combat illegal migration. In particular, Vietnam has been seriously and effectively implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), Giang said.
