President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to Yunus and other members of the new interim government at the presidential palace in the capital Dhaka. No representatives of former Prime Minister Hasina's Awami League party were present at the ceremony.

Mr. Yunus founded the Grameen Bank and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his efforts to create economic and social development through microcredit initiatives. Upon his return to Bangladesh, Mr. Yunus stressed that his and the interim government’s first responsibility is to ensure the safety of the people.

The main task of the interim government will be to restore peace and order in Bangladesh and prepare for new elections.
