(VOVWORLD) - A trio of US and Japanese scientists have been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work on the immune system.

The coveted prize by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet was awarded to Mary E. Brunkow (US), Fred Ramsdell (US), and Shimon Sakaguchi (Japan).
Their discovery concerning peripheral immune tolerance, which is orchestrated by regulatory T cells (Tregs), prevents the immune system from attacking the body's own tissues and is crucial for understanding and treating autoimmune diseases.
Following the announcement of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, the Nobel Week will continue with the prize in Physics on Tuesday, Chemistry on Wednesday, Literature on Thursday, Peace on Friday, and Economic Sciences next Monday. Each award includes a gold medal, a certificate, and 11 million Swedish kronor equivalent to 1.2 million USD.
The Nobel Prize Award Ceremony will take place on December 10, the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel, the founder of the prize.
