North Korea’s missile launches violate UN Resolution

(VOVworld) – North Korea’s missile launches violated the UN Resolution, said UN Security Council president Francois Delattre ahead of the Council’s closed-door meeting on Wednesday on North Korea’s firing of 2 objects, believed to be intermediate-range Musudan missiles, from Wonsan on North Korea’s east coast. Delattre called for a quick and firm reaction of the Security Council.

North Korea launched 2 missiles on Wednesday at 5:58 and 8:05 local time. The first test failed while the second test attained a range of 400 kilometres.

UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq called the launches an irresponsible act in defiance of the unanimous will of the international community.

The White House strongly condemned North Korea’s latest moves, calling them a grave violation of Pyongyang’s international obligations. According to US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, these launches raise the need for the US to build stronger missile defense to protect South Korea and US forces on the Korean Peninsula, Japan, and US territory.

On Thursday, Pyongyang claimed that it had successfully test-fired Hwasong-10, a surface-to-surface medium and long-range strategic ballistic missile, which accurately landed in the targeted waters forward 400 km. The test-fire confirmed the flying kinetic feature of North Korea’s ballistic missile with an updated system, safety, and the technical specifications of newly-designed rocket structure. Leader Kim Jong-un watched the launch on site and said North Korea has a “sure capability” to strike US “interests” in the Pacific region. He added that his country needs strong defense facilities to threaten its enemies and protect its citizens from threats of the US and other hostile forces.
