Party, National Assembly, Government agencies raise storm relief funds

(VOVWORLD) - The Party Central Committee’s Office on Thursday organized a fundraising campaign to support people affected by typhoon Bualoi. Party General Secretary To Lam and the Office staff donated at least one day of their salary.

General Secretary Lam urged provinces and cities to mobilize all available resources for search and rescue operations; help people repair their houses; arrange temporary accommodations; provide food, drinking water and other necessities for families who lost their home; and ensure that nobody goes hungry or homeless.

Mr. Lam called for the immediate repair of damaged educational and medical facilities, the ensuring of schooling and medical treatment, and the resumption essential services, particularly in isolated areas.

The National Assembly Standing Committee and National Assembly agencies raised more than 22,000 USD for storm victims on Thursday, and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed a decision allocating 95.6 million USD from the central budget reserve for relief efforts in 15 localities ravaged by Bualoi and other natural disasters this year.

PM Chinh, his deputies, and staff of the Government Office, and the Government Party Committee each donated at least one day’s salary.

As of 3 p.m. on Thursday, typhoon Bualoi killed 40, left 21 missing, and injured 150 people. 167,000 houses were damaged or had their roofs blown off. 58,800 houses and 1,430 schools were inundated; nearly 52,500 hectares of rice and crops were flooded, while hundreds of thousands of livestock and poultry died or were swept away; 15,302 hectares of aquatic products were damaged; many river and coastal embankments eroded. According to initial estimates from provinces and cities, the economic damage totals 416.7 million USD.
