(VOVWORLD) - Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on Friday against “excessive expectations” regarding peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv as US President Donald Trump threatened to impose new sanctions on Moscow, unless Russia makes progress on a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine by August 8.

“Any disappointments arise from excessive expectations,” Putin said during a press briefing after his meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in the Republic of Karelia, north of Russia.
In order to approach the issue peacefully, it is necessary to conduct detailed conversations, President Putin said. This must be done calmly, in the quiet of the negotiation process, he added. He emphasized the need for a long and lasting peace on foundations that would satisfy both Russia and Ukraine.
During the briefing, President Putin also announced that Russia has started production of its newest Oreshnik hypersonic missiles and reaffirmed its plans to deploy them to ally Belarus later this year.
