Three UN peacekeepers killed in southern Lebanon

(VOVWORLD) - At least three UN peacekeepers were killed this week as violence surged in southern Lebanon.

The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said two peacekeepers were killed on Monday when an explosion of unknown origin destroyed their vehicle near the village of Bani Hayyan, hours after an Indonesian peacekeeper was killed when a projectile exploded at a UNIFIL position near the village of Aadshit al-Qusayr.

These were the first UNIFIL fatalities since fighting between Israel and Hezbollah resumed on March 2.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said attacks on peacekeepers violate international law and may amount to war crimes. Indonesia, criticizing Israel’s attacks in southern Lebanon, condemned the deaths and called any harm to peacekeepers unacceptable.
