Division 308 was the first strategic reserve mobile regular unit of the Vietnam People's Army. Its name is associated with victories like the Border Campaign (Fall-Winter 1950), the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, the Route 9 - Khe Sanh and Route 9 - Southern Laos campaigns, and the defense of Quang Tri Ancient Citadel.

Division 308 is associated with the image of officers and soldiers of the Vanguard Army having the honor of meeting President Ho Chi Minh at the Temple of the Hung Kings relic site before taking over the capital Hanoi.

At the meeting, General Secretary and President To Lam asked the veterans of Division 308 to always maintain the noble qualities of "Uncle Ho's soldiers"; promote the traditions of the Armed Forces Hero unit; pioneer in implementing the guidelines and policies of the Party and State, and always be a shining example for their families and children to follow.
